  • New Vologda City Duma is preparing for work

  • It is worth reminding that the Vologda Oblast Governor and deputies of the Vologda City Duma were elected in Vologda on September 14. Representatives of the United Russia Party ran away with the election to the city parliament.

Over 140 candidates from 11 political parties applied for 30 mandates. It was the most competitive struggle for parliamentary seats within the last years. However, the results of the election are quite expected. Representatives of the United Russia got 26 mandates in the Vologda City Duma, the Liberal Democratic Party - 2, A Just Russia – one, and a self-nominated candidate – one.

Alexey Kanaev, secretary of the regional branch of the United Russia Party, commented upon the issue: “When the City Duma was formed five years ago, we had 20 representatives of the United Russia. And it took place under the conditions of not so competitive struggle and the number of parties was fewer. All this confirms that the United Russia was and is the leading political party of the region. It can solve problems, set new ambitions tasks and achieve results”.

The Sixth Vologda City Duma has been renewed by half in comparison with the previous parliament. 15 newly elected deputies have experience of parliamentary work, the other 15 are newcomers. The average age of the deputies is 42 years. These are mainly doctors, teachers, and representatives of public self-government. There are eight women among them for the first time. Thus, this Duma will be one of the most socially oriented during the history of the city parliament.

“Next week we will begin to form committees. It is very good that the skeleton staff of the parliament is the same. I think new deputies will settle down to a task quickly, will learn to make efficient, correct decisions that will help us to advance”, said Yuri Sapozhnikov, newly elected deputy, chairman of the Fifth Vologda City Duma.

The new deputies got serious support of the voters at the local level. Some of them gained over 60 and 70 percent of the popular vote. In general, the voter turnover in Vologda was 24,91 percent. For comparison, 19,78 percent of the electors voted in Cherepovets. There were no violations at the polling stations.

“I want to say that there were no complains and censures concerning the organization of the election. We would also note that all government agencies – state and municipal, the Administrative board of the Interior Ministry and the EMERCOM - rendered assistance to the election commissions in the execution of their authorities”, pointed out Lyudmila Antonova, chairperson of the Territorial Election Commission in the Vologda region.

It should be added that over 600 policemen kept the peace in the region on the Election Day. More than 1300 observers controlled the voting.

Oleg Kuvshinnikov, candidate for the Vologda Oblast Governor from the United Russia Party received considerable support in Vologda. 55 percent of the electors in the regional capital - over 32 thousand people - cast their votes for him. The incumbent governor won the election by a landslide.

“This result shows that Vologda’s residents trust Oleg Kuvshinnikov, his program and team. It is a passport of our future success. The tasks the incumbent governor is setting are rather ambitious and difficult, but I am sure that they are realizable with such confidence in the authorities”, declared Vologda’s Mayor Yevgeny Shulepov.

In spite of the difficult economic situation, Oleg Kuvshinnikov counts on social and economic development of the region. He will assume office in late September. The new deputies will also begin to work at the same time. The first session of the Sixth Vologda City Duma is scheduled for September 22.
